Overview
Regular maintenance keeps a vibratome cutting cleanly and reliably for years. Small habits prevent the drift in section quality that quietly undermines experiments.
Daily Care
- Clean the specimen plate and buffer tray after each session.
- Keep the blade holder clean and free of tissue debris.
- Check that the buffer is fresh and the tissue support is secure.
Weekly Checks
Inspect the blade, verify calibration of section thickness, and check that the advance and vibration mechanisms move smoothly without unusual noise.
Periodic Servicing
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule for lubrication, belt and drive inspection, and calibration verification. Keep a service log to track performance over time.
Documentation
Record settings and any issues. A well-documented instrument makes it easy to reproduce good sections and to diagnose problems early.
